Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mogul, Nevada, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair or alcohol testing needs. As experts in hair testing, we boast a presence in all cities nationwide, prepared to conduct thorough hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp—or body if necessary—are required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have surged in popularity for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are now choosing hair tests over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationary monitoring. Their main advantage lies in a detection window extending up to 90 days, using an observed sample collection that is tough to deceive. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive timeline of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of actively growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, roughly consisting of 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When head hair is mentioned, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Despite being a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive at Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is extracted and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive finding from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High deterrent to cheating: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: Offers a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: A timespan of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drug residues to appear in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the process evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
