Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oasis, Nevada. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in hair testing, with centers available in every major city across the nation capable of administering the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Over recent years, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are turning to hair drug testing instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary programs for their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days. Unlike urine tests, hair tests undergo supervised collection and are nearly impossible to cheat, but urine tests remain most reliable for very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair preserves a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the preferred sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps involved in the lab handling of a drug test sample are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This phase verifies that the specimen was sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a quick initial check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a practical way to eliminate drug usage on most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a much shorter detection span.
  • Hard to beat: Cheating in hair drug tests is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
