In Stateline, Nevada, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based testing, with available facilities across every city Nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair, though body hair can also be used. These tests screen for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle screenings have gained broader acceptance as a preferred method over standard urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair drug tests. Especially embraced in zero-tolerance work environments, probation, and courts, these tests provide a detection timeline stretching up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are almost foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug consumption within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering an extended timeline of substance use. A sample collected near the scalp can reflect up to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hairs, comparable to the size of a #2 pencil, provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the lab's system, verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is removed from the original sample for the Extraction process. This stage extracts drugs at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screenings undergo confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. Each phase from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronological tracking: Offers patterns of drug usage over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair testing.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
