Specialized Hair Testing in Stillwater, Nevada
Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stillwater, Nevada. Our expertise extends to hair tests for drugs and alcohol, with testing facilities spread across the nation. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas suffice for testing. Options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized tests tailored to specific needs.

Hair Follicle Testing: The Growing Trend
Over recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly. Used by employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists, these tests are replacing traditional urine tests due to their effectiveness. Employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies favor them, as do courts and probation officers. The extended detection period, up to 90 days, combined with the observed collection process, offers a nearly tamper-proof method. However, urine tests still dominate for detecting recent, within the last five days, drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can chart a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing markers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp contains 100mg of hair, providing the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal quantity of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. While it’s an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a minimal detection window.
  • Difficult to alter: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical use: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
