Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Canaan, New Hampshire. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is necessary, we specialize in this area and have centers nationwide for your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sufficient. Our tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with strict drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The key advantage of such a test is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and/or those above 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry lacking in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical way to discard drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Any positive results from screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug screening can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting urine tests which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It can establish a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
