Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing offers numerous centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other custom hair testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prioritize hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals prefer hair follicle tests primarily due to their extended detection span of up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has become recognized as a robust means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair, it offers a comprehensive historical account of substance use. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can potentially reveal a detection timeframe of up to three months for both drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields approximately 100mg, which serves as the ideal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional reports, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is advisable. It is advisable to assess the weight of the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sourced. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Laboratory procedure for a drug test comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial management of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This encompasses ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment to identify drug use. Although cost-efficient for negating drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening are subject to further verification.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much diluted levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before Confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It provides insights into drug use trends over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days post-consumption to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternate testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
