Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive options for hair follicle drug testing in Hudson, NH. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing provides you with options at our nationwide centers, including Hudson. Hair from the crown of your head or body, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically required. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown, superseding the traditional urine tests among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation services due to their prolonged detection span, up to 90 days. These tests are done under supervision and are extremely difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain supreme for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gradually archives information about alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward and challenging to tamper with, besides being convenient for shipping.

A sample that's 1.5 inches in length, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond ten panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. Scalp hair specifically refers to head hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial processing into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents the first quick assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical means of excluding drug usage from most samples, positive results in Screening must be verified to be legally admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening results indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as a more challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to adulteration: It is immensely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: The test can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption spanning a timeframe, rather than reflecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have a higher cost than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
