Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Milford, NH. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair testing across numerous centers Nationwide. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests are adaptable to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing configurations.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for assessing drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often opt for these tests over the classic urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal due to their extensive detection duration of up to 90 days. Despite the challenges in monitoring recent drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair delivers an extended history of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of the sample into the laboratory system. This involves checking the sample for proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input lacking from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive outcome demands confirmation for court validity. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening require additional confirmation procedures.

Should a sample show preliminary positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is considered complex.

Positive Screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. Every phase, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection: Hair drug tests facilitate drug use detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter scopes.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: They provide insights into long-term drug usage patterns, unlike tests that only detect recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically involve higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
