Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sanbornville, New Hampshire. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unmatched, with centers available Nationwide for conducting the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over regular urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, involve a monitored collection process, and are extremely challenging to manipulate. However, for substances used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a thorough timeline of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the hair’s fibers as it grows. When collected directly from the scalp, hair affords a detection period for drugs and alcohol of around three months. Hair is easily collected, challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional needs, and/or panels surpassing ten, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is optimal. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages are involved in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s database. It entails ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in a majority of specimens, any positive screen must be verified to hold in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening demand further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can detect substances for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Yields historical data: It tracks patterns of substance use over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot disclose recent use: Substances require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Hair color and individual growth variations can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
