Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Winona, New Hampshire. Specializing in hair-based substance tests, we have nationwide testing centers ready to assist with your needs. For most tests, you’ll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body, allowing us to screen for drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method over urine tests. A variety of entities such as employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists now opt for hair tests. The principal advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive detection period—up to 90 days—coupled with an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests maintain their precision for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or when testing beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that produce a presumed positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is hard to trick, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Chronological use pattern: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over months, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing The superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing lies in its heightened detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests present a broader detection window, catching substances up to 90 days post-use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
