Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alpine, New Jersey. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across the entire nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, and options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prominent in drug testing procedures. More employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing appeals to employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationers because of its longer detection period, lasting up to 90 days. While it's challenging to tamper with, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains extended-duration records of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When acquired proximal to the scalp, hair can yield a detection window for alcohol and drugs reaching up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent mass of body hair may be sourced. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. All other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.) are categorized as body hair.

Process Summary

The four pivotal procedures in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab’s framework. This procedure verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executes any additional data input not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally accepted. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary verification.

With a presumptive positive found in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents the most formidable challenge in terms of methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have narrowed detection timeframes.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extraordinarily difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: Provides an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not limited to recent events.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variabilities: Factors like hair color alongside individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle embedded beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
