Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Asbury, New Jersey. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair testing and operate testing centers nationwide, capable of carrying out hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. For employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases, hair follicle tests offer a key advantage: they detect drug use over a longer period, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them extremely difficult to alter. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence up to approximately three months back. It is straightforward to gather, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhanced tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair might be acquired. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary incorporation of a specimen into a lab's system. It entails verifying if the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest methodological challenge.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It delineates a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis specifically examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to identifying past substance use, hair follicle testing holds a notable edge over traditional urine testing in Asbury, NJ. Hair testing's ability to trace drug residues far exceeds urine tests, offering an impressive 90-day detection period. Not only does this provide employers a more thorough understanding of an individual's drug history, but it also greatly enhances detection accuracy and reliability compared to short-window urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Asbury, NJ, offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. This duration provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance use history, far exceeding the scope of urine tests. By measuring metabolites trapped in the hair shaft, employers can assess an employee's or applicant's long-term behavior, making it a valuable tool in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

When testing integrity is a priority, hair follicle tests in Asbury, NJ, significantly reduce the risk of sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which are vulnerable to adulteration, hair tests are tamper-resistant, requiring the direct collection of hair samples, which cannot easily be substituted or manipulated. This assurance provides reliable, accurate, and unquestionable results crucial for employers and legal entities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
