Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. Whether you need to test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers available across all U.S. cities to conduct hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it over the standard urine test. It's favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection, making tampering difficult. However, to assess recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized for its effectiveness in detecting drug and alcohol usage. Through the capture of biomarkers, hair offers an extended-term record of substance use. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to three months. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is less likely, and it’s convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is optimal for testing. In cases involving EtG, extra options, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If head hair cannot be used, equivalent body hair may be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing lab results for drug tests: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where the sample is logged into a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any data entry tasks not addressed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in legal situations. Presumptive positives from Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples indicating potential positivity in Screening, additional portions of the initial hair sample are used for Extraction. The extraction phase involves isolating drugs from hair at more diminutive concentrations than found in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis more complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to verify any positive results from the Screening. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s significantly challenging to manipulate hair drug test results, increasing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use patterns, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs generally become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically incurs higher costs than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Known as "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand, not the in-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
