Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Augusta, New Jersey. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing extends across several cities nationwide, with facilities to conduct such assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body parts is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific purposes.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly been adopted as a preferred drug testing method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are turning to hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by entities enforcing strict drug-free policies, and for probation monitoring. Key advantages include an extended detection period of up to 90 days, with collection conducted under supervision, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, when detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use of drugs and alcohol. The growing hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers, offering a historical record of alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples collected from near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to approximately three months. Hair samples are easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 200 hair strands (about the same size as a #2 pencil) measuring 1.5 inches and collected near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When the term "head hair" is used, it specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is first introduced into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry required beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening provides a preliminary efficient check for abuse of substances. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. All samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, as opposed to urine evaluations which cover a shorter period.
  • Challenges in results manipulation: It is extremely challenging to falsify outcomes in hair drug evaluations, enhancing result fidelity.
  • Historical usage insight: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, rather than just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Variability in findings: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the concentration levels of drug compounds in hair.

Note: Often cited as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing options in Augusta, NJ, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. They provide a more accurate and trustworthy assessment, making them a superior choice. With the ability to detect substance use over an extended period, hair tests are invaluable for employers and others implementing zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
