Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Avenel, New Jersey. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair testing shines, with centers available in cities nationwide ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.
Recently, the choice for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, probation, and court orders. One key advantage is their 90-day detection period, with an observed and secure collection process, making them hard to manipulate. Urine tests, however, remain the most accurate for drug detection in the past 5 days.

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed historical account of substances, trapping biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection range for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.
A 1.5-inch batch comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. Referring to head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively, while body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory stages for processing a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening provides a fast initial check for substance abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.
When a sample demonstrates a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.
GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening findings. All samples suspected positive undergo washing before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.
