Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beemerville, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we're experts in this testing method with facilities nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. We offer options for drug, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair analyses.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are often choosing hair tests over urine tests. Companies with no drug policies, courts, and probation cases benefit from hair testing because it offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, observed during collection and very hard to manipulate. Conversely, urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use, particularly within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair is capable of offering a detection range of up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields around 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses alternative types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen result must be substantiated for legal acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positive results at the Screening stage require a secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening a highly meticulous methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. Every step in the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It delivers a timeline of drug use over a period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
