Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beverly, New Jersey. Need a drug or alcohol analysis? We focus on hair testing and have centers available across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the scalp or elsewhere. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or facilitate other personalized hair testing requests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug evaluations have gained traction over traditional methods. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and substance misuse professionals prefer hair tests to the conventional urine ones. Employers with strict drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation employ hair follicle tests due to their extensive detection window, which ranges up to 90 days, the supervised collection method, and their resilient nature against manipulation. However, urine tests remain unparalleled for detection within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers in the strands as hair grows, it delivers an extended overview of alcohol and drug history. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers about a 3-month window for drug and alcohol detection. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measurement. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial integration into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and transport, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, legal admissibility necessitates confirming any positive findings. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Hair Extraction recovers drugs at a substantially lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' shorter correlation periods.
  • Minimal chance of evasion: Hair drug tests are extremely challenging to manipulate, enhancing their reliability.
  • Supplies historical usage data: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, unlike snapshots of recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp’s follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
