Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Blairstown, New Jersey. If you're in need of drug or alcohol testing using hair, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist. With testing centers across the country, including all cities, we conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various customized options.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has risen. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation frequently choose hair follicle tests. The main advantage is a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days. It's nearly impossible to cheat due to the observed collection process. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture a long-term record by encasing biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. The collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. It's advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab analysis for drug test outcomes involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. It includes verifying the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as a preliminary scan for drug substances. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples that potentially test positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a screening suggest a positive result, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than through other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening requires Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. Every laboratory stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to a 90-day period, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resilience against deception: Its results are more reliable because cheating a hair drug test poses significant difficulty.
  • Historical usage insight: It shows a trend of drug use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to register immediate use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days following drug consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth disparities can influence metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug detection methods in Blairstown, NJ, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests. Hair testing's ability to detect drugs over an extended period makes it an excellent choice for those needing precise detection. Unlike urine tests, which only capture recent drug use, hair testing offers a comprehensive look back. This reliability in detection ensures accurate outcomes for users.

Employers and agencies find hair follicle testing more beneficial due to its longer detection window compared to urine tests. Not only is the process less invasive, but it provides a detailed overview of an individual's substance use. For these reasons, hair testing is gaining popularity as a preferred method of drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Blairstown, NJ, is a major advantage over other methods. Unlike shorter period tests, hair testing reveals drug use for up to 90 days, providing a thorough look at an individual's substance use history. This extensive timeframe allows employers to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data.

Employers in Blairstown benefit from this longer detection period by gaining insights that temporary tests can't offer. This method ensures a complete understanding of potential employees' behaviors, allowing for careful screening. Hair follicle testing thus stands out as a leading drug testing method.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests makes them a preferred choice in Blairstown, NJ. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
