Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bogota, New Jersey. For hair drug or alcohol evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, and we maintain test sites in all U.S. cities capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, whether from the head or body. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over the years, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle exams. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse officials prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation rely on hair tests. Hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, gathered in a monitored process, and are almost impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage through the growing hair strand. Collected from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection period for substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation tasks. For EtG, additional tests, or for panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair is usable. 'Head hair' pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the laboratory's system, involving verification of proper sealing and shipment, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any leftover data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick preliminary examination for abused drugs. Despite its cost-efficiency in excluding drug usage for most samples, a positive screening outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Presumptive positives in Screening lead to additional sampling and preparation for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair in this phase at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to implement.

Positive screening results receive Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo prior washing if needed before confirmation. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows usage patterns: Offers a record of drug consumption over time, unlike recent use detection.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection limitation: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being named "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Tests in Bogota, NJ? Hair follicle testing offers superior advantages when compared to urine tests.

  • Extended Detection: Hair tests detect drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days.
  • Reliability: The accuracy and dependability of hair testing surpass traditional methods, eliminating false negatives common with urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

  • Hair analysis can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, offering a detailed view of an individual's possible drug habits.
  • This extended window is crucial for employers seeking a comprehensive substance history of potential hires or current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
