Any samples that show positive indications in Screening necessitate subsequent validation.

Should a sample test positive initially during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, intoxicants are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex method to execute.

Any positive result from screening undergoes confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positivity are purified before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, falls under review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
