Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bordentown, New Jersey. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise is in hair analysis and we operate centers across all cities nationwide where these tests can be conducted. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typical, although body hair may be used. Hair evaluations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug screening. Many employers, legal bodies, and substance professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, with observed collection that's nearly tamper-proof. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reflect a detection period of up to three months for various drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair, approximately as thick as a pencil, taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. When performing tests for EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. In this context, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and conducts any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court admissible. Samples that test positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen test positive in the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, the drug is extracted from hair at a much lower level than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine testing provides a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Hair drug tests offer a timeline of drug consumption over weeks or months, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative methods.
  • Variable results: Individual differences, like hair color and growth rates, may impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand above the scalp, not the hair follicle beneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
