At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Brainards, New Jersey. When you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, turn to our expertise in hair testing. With testing centers located across cities nationwide, we're equipped to conduct these tests with 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

There has been a rising trend toward hair follicle drug assessments in recent years. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prioritize hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Employers advocating zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation, make use of hair tests. The chief advantage is the extensive detection time span of up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, making it virtually cheat-proof. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, resisting tampering, and easy to send.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil’s width) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core phases in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial intake of a sample within a lab’s system. It includes checking the sample’s seal and shipment, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift evaluation for drug presence. While it’s a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal validity. Any samples flagged as presumptuous positives in Screening need further corroboration.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is then extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair testing as a complex procedure.

Confirmation for any positive screen result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The lab’s complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair test is highly challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over months, unlike tests showing just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
