Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Brielle, New Jersey. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have facilities nationwide that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test method has grown in popularity over recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now favor it over the standard urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation individuals utilize these tests. Their main advantage is a longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands. If gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a roughly 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately equal to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and verifying results. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory test processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first entered into a laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any required data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial, quick review for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-effective means to eliminate most samples from further scrutiny, a positive result on the screen must be confirmed for potential legal acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the main specimen for the Extraction process. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than seen in other methods (like urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive go through a washing process before confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably tough, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days post-use for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual growth differences can alter the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", this analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
