Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Broadway, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise ensures that you receive precise results. With testing centers available nationwide, we accommodate your needs with professionalism. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically necessary from the head or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional means. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are shifting towards hair testing instead of urine tests. It is favored by those upholding zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation requirements. The major advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with monitored collection that minimizes deceit. Yet, for recent drug use checks, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures and preserves behavioral markers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows, providing a historical record of substance use over extended durations. When obtained near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeline of approximately up to three months for both alcohol and various drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, not easily compromised, and convenient to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable in girth to a #2 pencil) taken from the nearest point to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimum sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG analysis, additional assessments, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent volume of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all remaining types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary inclusion of a sample into the laboratory’s database, ensuring the sample’s correct sealing and dispatch, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not already captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples that initially test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample produce a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations considerably lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for the Confirmation of any positive Screening result. Preceding confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed accordingly. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review consistent with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It offers an account of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
