Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Budd Lake, New Jersey. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, our expertise in hair testing spans across cities nationwide, ensuring accessibility for all. Generally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the head, is necessary, allowing for tailored drug, alcohol/ETG, or specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in drug detection methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Addiction Specialists are now favoring this over traditional urine tests. These hair tests are utilized by organizations with stringent no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. Key advantages include an extended detection period of up to 90 days, supervised sample collection, and high integrity against tampering. For recent usage detection, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When specifying head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were correct, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a preliminary, rapid examination for substance use. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug presence in most cases, a positive result in Screening necessitates further confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a confirmatory examination.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a far lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is acknowledged as the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical patterns: It can exhibit patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Results may vary: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the amount of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Budd Lake, NJ, stands out against urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Where urine tests can only reveal recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader window, highlighting substance use over a longer period, ensuring better compliance and employee safety.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing minimizes the risk of adulteration, making it a trustworthy option for employers and authorities. The high reliability ensures that results are not easily manipulated, offering peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a significant advantage in Budd Lake, NJ, with its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history, enabling employers to make informed decisions about potential hires or current employees.

Unlike other methods, hair testing uncovers patterns of long-term substance use, affording businesses a complete history rather than a snapshot, ensuring better monitoring over time and supporting drug-free workplace initiatives.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Budd Lake, NJ, hair follicle drug tests are celebrated for their tamper-resistant nature. This method significantly reduces the chance of sample manipulation, providing reliable and conclusive results that can be trusted by employers and legal entities alike.

Hair testing not only ensures accuracy but also secures the integrity of the sample. By virtually eliminating the risk of sample adulteration, it strengthens the confidence in the testing process and outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
