Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Camden, NJ. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair-based evaluations, with centers in cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. For most cases, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown, or body hair may be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. More employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are often utilized by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary cases. The primary advantage of hair follicle tests is their extensive detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected in a supervised setting, making it nearly impossible to compromise. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a lengthy history of alcohol and substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of hair. When procured near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of nearly three months for substances. The collection process is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, only scalp hair is implied. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab consists of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, however, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-worthy. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to deception, offering more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It displays drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair tests.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.
