Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Cassville, New Jersey. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with testing centers across all parts of the nation. For most instances, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed on the crown or body for testing. Hair tests can evaluate for substances, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a common method in drug testing. Many businesses, legal bodies, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by companies with strict drug policies, legal systems, and for those under probation. A standout advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored sample collection that is near foolproof. However, for assessing recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to manipulate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for preliminary testing and verification. For EtG, additional screens, and/or assessments surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate for using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If hair from the scalp is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves conducting a preliminary verification for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that initially test positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample initially test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use spanning a duration, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A duration of about 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair shaft and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
