Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chesilhurst, New Jersey. For hair or alcohol tests, trust Accredited Drug Testing's expertise, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, or body hair is suitable. Results can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customizable options, depending on needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prominent in recent years for drug detection. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Preferred by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation programs, hair tests boast an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, utilize observed collection, and resist cheating attempts. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures biomarkers within the strands, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period spanning up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg, the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data recording not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Although cost-effective for most samples, any positive results in Screening need validation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation in the Extraction phase. Drugs are retrieved from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is executed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Challenge to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: The test can track drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: A 5-7 day interval is required for drugs to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variation in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
