In Clarksboro, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drugs or alcohol, hair tests are our specialty. Our testing centers are available nationwide and can conduct hair examinations requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, typically. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer it over standard urine analysis. Hair drug tests cater to strict drug-free workplaces, legal systems, and those on probation. The main advantage lies in its detection window, catching drug use up to 90 days, carried out through a supervised process, reducing cheating risks. However, urine tests are more precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for alcohol and drug detection by preserving biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment including approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair may be obtained. The term head hair solely refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four integral stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample is assessed as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result from screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical use data: It can offer a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clarksboro, NJ, hair follicle drug testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. The longer detection window for hair testing allows for a comprehensive overview of drug use, reaching up to 90 days, whereas urine tests only capture recent use. This extended period can be invaluable for employers tracking long-term substance abuse.

Additionally, hair testing presents a superior reliability factor as it is less prone to tampering. In contrast, urine samples might be adulterated, providing false negatives. Thus, hair testing emerges as a more dependable choice for those enforcing drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair testing in Clarksboro, NJ offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This feature provides employers with a detailed overview of an individual's substance habits, offering a broader perspective than standard urine tests.

This lengthy detection period is particularly beneficial for businesses aiming to maintain a drug-free workplace, ensuring they have comprehensive insights before making employment decisions, thus enhancing safety and productivity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the primary advantages of hair follicle testing in Clarksboro, NJ is its tamper-resistant nature. The collection method significantly reduces the chances of sample adulteration, ensuring honest results.

While other testing methods might be susceptible to manipulation, hair samples cannot be easily altered. This integrity is crucial for employers and legal entities relying on accurate data to enforce policies, making it a preferred choice for robust drug testing measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
