Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clarksburg, New Jersey. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair from the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, or body hair can be used. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specialized testing.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly embraced hair follicle drug testing. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts require hair drug tests over traditional urine sampling. These tests serve entities with stringent anti-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window—up to 90 days—and the test's robustness against manipulation. Nevertheless, for recent substance consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal an approximate 3-month detection window for substances. Harvesting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to gather 150mg of hair. We suggest measuring the hair weight with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be scarce, an equivalent portion of body hair might be collected. "Head hair" specifies only scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test lab processes a sample through four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is processed into the lab system, checking the sample's shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data if the electronic chain of custody didn't provide it.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of illicit substances. While cost-effective and excluding drug presence in many results, a screen showing positive requires further confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive results in Screening phase necessitate secondary confirmation.

In scenarios of presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are pulled out from hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair testing is a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized to verify all positive screening results. All samples indicating positivity are cleansed before confirmation as per requirements. Every laboratory step from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can discover drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection duration.
  • Cheating is unlikely: It's nearly impossible to adulterate a hair drug test, making outcomes more precise.
  • Chronological insight: It offers an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
