Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Colonia, New Jersey. Specializing in hair testing, our centers across the nation, including all major cities, offer both alcohol and drug tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for testing, which can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, and other custom substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent times for various entities such as employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. This alternative to the traditional urine test benefits zero-tolerance policies due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days. Furthermore, it's conducted under observation, making it highly resistant to tampering, though urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can capture biomarkers within the strands as they grow, thus providing a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair exclusively. Body hair comprises all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test output typically follows four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab's records. This includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening process offers an initial, rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be corroborated to be legally acceptable. Any samples presumed positive at this stage necessitate further confirmation.

If during Screening a sample appears positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, substances are drawn from hair at much lower levels than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing a more complex process.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug activity for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a smaller detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Supplies past data: It offers a timeline of drug use over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
