Operating in Cranberry Lake, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether for alcohol or drugs, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct specialized hair testing, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Customized options are available for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a favored choice over traditional urine tests in recent years. Employers, courts, and professionals often prefer them due to their zero-tolerance policies. A key advantage is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results with minimal cheating risk. For detecting recent use, within five days, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is prudent to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an identical quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair is used exclusively for scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any extra data entry if not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to stand in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity require further confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexities of hair drug testing methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening finding is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
