Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Darlington, New Jersey. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, look no further. We are experts in hair analysis and have facilities in every city across the country that conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists prefer these tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and those monitoring probationary individuals utilize hair tests. Their main advantage is a longer detection span, up to 90 days, almost impossible to falsify and observed during collection. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best option for identifying recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair affords around a three-month period for identifying alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, adulteration is somewhat challenging, and it is easy to send for analysis.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 strands of hair, comparable to the width of a #2 pencil and closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG supplements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair could be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages are involved in the laboratory journey of processing a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase entails ensuring the sample's seal and shipment are intact, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation to stand legal scrutiny. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening will need further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug testing is notoriously challenging to carry out.

Any confirmed positive result from Screening proceeds through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning process before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation adheres to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods, hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days.
  • High accuracy: Due to the difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests, they ensure higher accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a depiction of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Darlington, NJ, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests with distinct advantages. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis boasts a detection window of up to 90 days, offering comprehensive insights into an individual's substance history. This extended duration makes hair testing an ideal choice for employers seeking thorough vetting.

Hair tests also deliver more accurate and reliable results, minimizing the risk of false negatives or positives. This enhances their use in various settings, from employment screenings to legal evaluations. By employing this superior method, users in Darlington can expect greater confidence in the outcomes, reflecting a true picture of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

The primary advantage of hair follicle testing in Darlington, NJ is its extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This prolonged period allows for a comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance use history, making it a preferred choice for thorough investigations.

Employers in Darlington can utilize this method to obtain a detailed view of an employee's or candidate's past 90 days of substance activity. By leveraging hair follicle testing, organizations gain valuable insights, allowing for informed decisions based on a full understanding of a candidate's behavior and history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
