In Dayton, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with test centers located Nationwide for your convenience. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in drug screening approaches. It's preferred by employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests. The major advantage is the prolonged detection period, spanning up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making tampering challenging. Yet, urine tests remain the standard for recent usage detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows, hair can offer an extended history of drug consumption. When gathered from the scalp area, hair can reveal a substance usage history spanning up to around three months. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment made up of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) collected from the scalp area yields about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both analysis and verification. For EtG tests and other comprehensive panels over 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine specimen weight. If head hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair is an acceptable substitute. When mentioning head hair, it is specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the drug test laboratory process include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering the sample into the system for lab analysis. This phase consists of confirming the sample's proper packaging and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any neglected data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for abused substances. Although efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to hold up in legal contexts. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need further validation.

If a sample tests positive at the Screening level, additional hair is separated from the original sample for Extraction. This process involves retrieving drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than through other methods (like urine or saliva), positioning hair drug screening as a particularly demanding technique.

Validation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumed positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation as necessary. The entire examination procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and within the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation framework.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug screens can identify substance use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited timeline.
  • Challenging to forge: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably tough, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Displays historical use: This method can trace a drug consumption pattern over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair typically within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by hair color and growth rate differences between individuals.

Note: Widely referred to as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that undergoes analysis, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
