Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Deal, NJ. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair diagnostics, boasting testing facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct a hair analysis. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown, although body hair can also be used. These tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methodologies increasingly feature hair follicle drug evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers often rely on hair follicle drug assessments. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window for substance use, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of a growing hair, hair retains a long-lasting record of alcohol and other substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer around a 90-day period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample is a 1.5-inch cut of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, giving 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

In the laboratory processing of a drug test result, the primary phases are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. The process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective technique to exclude drug use in most samples, positive findings must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples testing positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complex nature of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It evidences a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Hair requires about 5-7 days before drugs appear detectable.
  • Cost: Typically, hair tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by attributes like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and excludes the underneath scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
