In Little Silver, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair tests is evident, with testing centers across the nation ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug detection. This shift is driven by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts, who now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. They offer a longer detection window typically up to 90 days, feature an observed collection, and are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug usage detection within a recent five-day period, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair maintains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the best quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When head hair is mentioned, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing drug test results consist of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample processing into a laboratory's system. This stage ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift drug abuse check. Although Screening is an economical strategy for excluding drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for court admissibility of a positive screen. Any Screening samples that are presumptively positive require confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), evidencing the complexity of hair drug screening.

For Confirmation, any positive screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: This test highlights a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests have higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Results variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth disparities can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
