Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dover Beaches South, New Jersey. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this medium, operating numerous centers nationwide skilled in these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Many organizations, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair testing over conventional urine exams. Employers with zero-tolerance protocols, legal systems, and individuals on probation often utilize hair tests. These tests offer a longer detection window, often extending to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's hard to undermine. However, for identifying very recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its fibers during growth. By sampling near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to about 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is suggested. If there is no scalp hair available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only, while body hair includes any other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and cost-effective process to check for drug misuse. Though it rules out drug usage in most samples, positive results need confirmation for legal validity. Specimens that test positive initially require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples takes place before confirmation. The full laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Less prone to tampering: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical substance data: Shows patterns of drug use over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair tests are pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variances: Variables like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
