Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Echelon, New Jersey. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing spans nationwide with centers in cities across the country to conduct hair tests. Typically, you’ll need to provide 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests are capable of analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been integrated into drug testing procedures. A multitude of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services endorse hair follicle tests primarily due to their extended detection window for drug use, which usually spans up to 90 days, follows a supervised collection process, and is virtually tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use, typically within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and is easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount necessary for both screening and confirmation. In cases involving EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It is advisable to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s information system. This step involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for most samples, any positive result from Screening must undergo confirmation to be legally upheld. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening more challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Allows for drug detection for up to 90 days, in comparison to urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Makes it challenging to falsify results, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical pattern: It charts drug use patterns over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing tends to be more expensive than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called “hair follicle tests,” the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Echelon, NJ focuses on comparing its benefits. Hair follicle testing stands superior to urine tests due to its extended detection capabilities. While urine tests may only uncover recent drug use, hair tests provide insights into drug use over a far longer period, making them highly effective in identifying patterns of substance use.

The methods involved in hair testing also offer a higher degree of accuracy and are less susceptible to tampering than urine tests. This reliability ensures employers and legal systems are making informed decisions based on robust evidence, rather than the snapshot that urine tests represent.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test's extended detection window in Echelon, NJ, proves invaluable for employers seeking a comprehensive substance history on applicants. By tracing drug use up to 90 days back, it surpasses other methods limited in scope, thus providing a fuller picture of an individual's drug habits.

This extended detection period can reveal recurring substance issues, thereby equipping employers with the necessary information to make informed hiring decisions. In contrast, other methods might miss such patterns, which this comprehensive timeline readily captures.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-resistant testing methods like hair follicle tests significantly enhance reliability in Echelon, NJ. Unlike other methods susceptible to sample tampering, hair tests offer undeniable integrity. The supervised collection process ensures the authenticity of samples, leading to results that are unchallengeable and highly trusted.

Due to its inherent resistance to tampering, hair testing is widely regarded as a definitive solution in settings where reliability cannot be compromised. This method effectively minimizes the risk of manipulation, providing peace of mind to employers and legal authorities alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
