Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Eldridge Park, New Jersey. In need of a hair drug or alcohol test? Our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have centers in every city nationwide ready to conduct your test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing more commonly includes hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair testing over standard urine checks. Businesses enforcing strict drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation frequently utilize hair tests. The key advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, observed during the collection process, making cheating virtually impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it provides a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is cut near the scalp, it offers a drug and alcohol detection period of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly secure from tampering, and simple to transport.

Collecting a sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp should yield approximately 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

In laboratory processing of drug test results, the key stages are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s framework, which includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. Though a cost-effective method to identify drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction, where drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging to perform.

To verify any positive result from the screening phase, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS comes into play. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests can detect drug use within a span of up to 90 days.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers insight into a pattern of sustained drug use over a duration, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Cost: Compared to other drug-testing methods, hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses.
  • Variations in results: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Eldridge Park, NJ, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Its superior accuracy and detection capabilities provide more reliable results, offering a robust assessment of substance use history.

Unlike urine tests, which may miss traces of drug use over longer periods, hair testing captures a comprehensive history. This reliability reduces errors and increases confidence in the results, reinforcing its status as a preferred method.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Eldridge Park, NJ, captures drug use for up to 90 days, offering a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This extended detection window surpasses other methods, making it ideal for long-term analysis.

The broad timespan in which hair tests can detect drug usage grants employers comprehensive insight into an employee's past behavior. This depth of analysis is key for decisions regarding employment and compliance with organizational policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Eldridge Park, NJ, hair follicle testing minimizes the possibility of sample tampering. Its robust collection process ensures results are reliable and trustworthy, eliminating questions about their integrity.

The difficulty of adulterating a hair sample compared to urine reduces risks of falsified results, offering a method that stands strong against manipulation. This ensures that decisions are based on genuine information.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
