Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elmer, New Jersey. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, they excel in hair testing, with centers available in every city across the country to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may suffice for these tests. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Lately, drug testing often includes hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug testing over urine tests. These tests are embraced by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and people on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is the extensive detection duration of up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making it nearly impossible to cheat. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption has gained recognition. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drug traces. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. Utilization of a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair may be procured. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a specimen into the lab's database. Tasks include ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included via an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation to be legally valid. Samples with provisional positive results in Screening require a secondary validation.

In cases where the Screening indicates a provisional positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a history of drug use over time rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests with greater accuracy and reliability. In Elmer, NJ, this method is favored due to its extended detection window and resistance to tampering. Unlike urine tests, which detect only recent drug use, hair tests reveal evidence over a longer span, ensuring more comprehensive results.

While traditional urine tests have been standard, hair follicle tests provide more robust data about substance use. Their resistance to alteration and longer detection make them a preferred choice for thorough drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Elmer, NJ, boasts an extended detection period of up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This long detection window aids in making informed hiring and employment decisions.

By detecting drug use over three months, hair follicle tests ensure employer confidence in assessing an applicant's substance habits, providing a comprehensive picture that surpasses shorter-term tests like urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
