Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fair Haven, New Jersey. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol examination you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based evaluations and has centers across all American cities that conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are suitable for testing. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific criteria.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has leaned more toward using hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with stringent drug-free policies, the courts, and probationary monitoring often rely on hair follicle drug assessments. The key advantage is their longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for identifying substance use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable technique for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When retrieved near the scalp, hair may offer a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred specimen for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases entailed in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses verifying the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical tactic to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive result must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which hold a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a usage pattern of drug intake over a period, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
