Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Fairfield, NJ. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing with locations nationwide that can administer a hair test. For most cases, possession of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, the court system, and substance abuse experts require hair drug tests instead of standard urine tests. Employers with no drug use policies, courts, and people on probation prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, collected under observation and nearly impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain most accurate for screening recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly valued as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a lasting record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected very near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug use for up to around 90 days. Hair samples are easy to acquire, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A snippet of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp, amounts to 100mg—viewed as the optimal sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a proportionate amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair signify scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

When processing a drug test in the lab, the procedure includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial reception of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary test for drug presence. Despite Screening’s advantage in being an economical filter to discount drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands subsequent confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening necessitate further validation.

In the event that a sample is potentially positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves withdrawing drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid testing, underpinning why hair drug analysis is arguably the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Pre-confirmation, all suspected positive samples are cleaned as necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly hard to alter the outcome of a hair drug test, securing more reliable results.
  • Chronicles use: It illustrates a usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incidence of overlooking recent usage: A 5-7 day duration is necessary for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug testing incurs higher expenses than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug traces detected in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strands rather than the under-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
