Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Farmingdale, NJ. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in these evaluations, with centers across every major city nationwide to conduct hair tests. A sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or from the body is generally needed for the test. Options for hair analysis include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has grown into a significant component of drug testing in today's landscape. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals frequently prefer hair tests over urine analyses. Such tests are vital for entities enforcing strict anti-drug policies. A key advantage of hair tests lies in their extended detection capacity, spanning up to 90 days, with managed sample collection making tampering extremely difficult, although urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-on tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair in our context. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the laboratory’s system initially. This step involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, brief drug check. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples showing a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive result is found during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insight: It provides a usage pattern over time rather than a snapshot of recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth patterns can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
