Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Finesville, New Jersey. For those requiring a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in the field, with locations across all U.S. cities, capable of conducting such tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body hair can be utilized. Testing includes drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal proceedings, and probationary situations. The standout advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken from the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch section with approximately 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair, apt for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Even though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation for court acceptability. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and arranged for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage patterns: Hair tests can show drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Finesville, NJ, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over traditional urine tests. One reason for this preference is the superior detection accuracy offered by hair tests. They provide a more reliable assessment of substance use, ensuring that results are trustworthy and leave little room for doubt.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
