Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Franklin Lakes, NJ. When a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers across various cities nationwide that can execute these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair is sufficient. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing more often incorporates hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now lean towards hair testing over customary urine testing. Hair tests cater to employers upholding strict no-drug policies, court settings, and individuals on legal supervision. The standout advantage is the longer detection duration, up to 90 days, secured through an observed collection, making deception nearly unfeasible. Despite this, when tracing drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the definitive method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can illustrate a long-term usage history of substances by capturing biomarkers in the hair's growing strands. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can offer an approximately 3-month detection window for drug and alcohol use. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment from about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panel tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg is suggested. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair is strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical means of eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive from Screening demand additional confirmation.

Upon a positive presumption during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In the Extraction stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Any positive result from screening is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive presumptively are cleaned as needed before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical pattern: It can depict a usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
