Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

In Franklin Park, NJ, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For individuals in need of hair drug or alcohol analysis, we have nationwide centers that offer specialized hair testing. Generally, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown or other body areas, to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the favored method for screening in recent years. Various sectors, including employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary requirements, and probation conditions. Their biggest advantage is an extended detection window, typically lasting up to 90 days, with collection observed, making them nearly impossible to adulterate. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair enables long-duration tracking of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of nearly three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional panels, and tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we specify head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (like facial or armpit hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

In the Screening phase, there is an initial rapid scan for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples; however, for court acceptability, any positive results from Screening require confirmation. Samples that test as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (such as urine or saliva), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substances for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Cheating is nearly impossible: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, offering more accurate findings.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests can trace a pattern of drug use over months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Franklin Park, NJ, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Extended Detection periods can capture substance use over months, unlike urine tests which are limited to recent times. This ensures a comprehensive assessment of an individual's drug history.
Furthermore, hair testing is less susceptible to manipulation, enhancing the integrity of the process. Employers value this reliability, especially when maintaining safety and compliance is critical.

An important benefit of hair testing is its resistance to cheating. While urine samples can be adulterated, hair samples retain traces of drug use that are difficult to erase. This makes hair follicle testing an unbeatable choice for securing accurate data on substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Franklin Park, NJ, hair follicle testing stands out with an impressive detection window of up to 90 days. This expansive timeframe offers employers a thorough review of an individual’s drug use history, far exceeding the capabilities of other drug tests.
Such a panoramic approach allows companies to make decisions with a full scope at their disposal, aiding in creating a safe and drug-free working environment. This long-lasting detection period fortifies the credibility and utility of hair tests.

Employers benefit from the capacity to view substance usage patterns over an extended duration. The resultant data becomes a cornerstone for evaluating consistency or patterns in drug use, aiding in making informed employment decisions while ensuring compliance with workplace policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the core strengths of hair follicle testing in Franklin Park, NJ, is its tamper resistance. Unlike urine tests, which are prone to alteration, hair tests significantly mitigate risks of sample adulteration.
The samples collected from hair are not only collected under strict observation but are also resistant to external contaminants. This inherent resilience boosts the dependability of results, offering indisputable data on drug use for those concerned about testing accuracy.

Through this enhanced resistance to tampering, hair testing gives employers, courts, and other institutions unbeatable assurance and confidence in the results obtained. The meticulous nature of hair testing methods acts as a safeguard against any attempts to compromise test integrity, reinforcing their role as a trustworthy drug-testing solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
