Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Frenchtown, New Jersey. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, providing hair testing at centers throughout the country. Typically, hair samples from your head's crown or body segments ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for screening. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are ideal for workplaces enforcing drug-free policies, legal courts, and those under probation. The main advantage is their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making tampering difficult. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested that the sample is weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair extends to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This process encompasses checking the correct sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be verified for legitimacy in judicial settings. All samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodologically.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair authorization and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus rendering results more reliable.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
