At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Golf View, NJ. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers nationwide—including all cities—are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, hair from the crown measuring at least 1.5 to 2 inches is required, or body hair can be utilized. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method in drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are preferred by those enforcing strict no-drug policies due to their extended detection period—up to 90 days. However, for drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains biomarkers within its fibers during growth, offering a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over an approximately 3-month duration. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is fuss-free.

A 1.5-inch length consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG add-ons or when testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair not be available, body hair of equal quantity is acceptable. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing a sample to a lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While this is a cost-efficient manner to discount drug usage in most samples, any positive findings in Screening require confirmation for court validity. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should The Screening phase yield a presumptively positive result, additional hair is utilized from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, substances are drawn from hair at concentrations lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screenings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with their shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on hair drug tests is notably difficult, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: Provides insights into a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent instances.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not detect immediate consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assay actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
