In Green Village, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If hair drug or alcohol tests are required, our specialty encompasses hair testing with centers nationwide. Hair sample requirements typically involve 1.5 to 2 inches, from either the head or body. This type of analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over urine tests. Organizations adhering to zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation favor hair tests because they offer a longer detection window. They can detect substance use for up to 90 days, involve an observed collection, and are challenging to manipulate. Urine tests, however, remain superior for drug detection within the first five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the elongating hair strand. If obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, comparatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the specimen is made. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When refering to head hair, we refer to scalp hair solely. Body hair implies all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be potentially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are derived from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria, alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter time frame of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly tough to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing often considered superior to urine tests in Green Village, NJ? One major advantage is the extended detection window. Hair tests can detect drug usage up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests only cover a brief recent period. This comprehensive view allows for better insight into one's substance history.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers enhanced reliability and accuracy. By examining the hair's composition, this method provides a more in-depth analysis, diminishes chances of tampering, and is less intrusive, all while delivering superior detection results in Green Village, NJ.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
