Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Guttenberg, New Jersey. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with locations in cities across the nation offering these services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can be utilized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing methods has risen. Many workplaces, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of the more common urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services often prefer hair follicle drug testing. Its main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, and is nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests still prevail in detecting recent drug use, typically up to the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing emerges as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fiber strands. Hair collected near the scalp can present a detection span for alcohol and drugs of up to nearly 3 months. The collection process for hair is easy, difficult to tamper with, and simple for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately the size of a #2 pencil, consisting of about 200 strands nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For assessments like EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it’s advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial stage where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary scan for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use on most samples; however, any positive result needs additional confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at minimal concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is attained via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that are presumptively positive must be cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption over 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It delivers a usage pattern over a specific duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
